This course is educational and does not replace an individualized evaluation or treatment plan.
Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
Speech sound development can be confusing for parents, caregivers, educators, and professionals who want to understand what is expected as children grow. This beginner-friendly course explains speech sound development in clear, practical language and provides a structured way to think about speech milestones, intelligibility, phonological processes, and possible areas of concern.
Throughout the course, you will learn how a child's intelligibility may change between ages two and seven. You will also be introduced to common phonological processes, including patterns such as fronting, final consonant deletion, cluster reduction, syllable reduction, and gliding.
The course also reviews factors that may be associated with speech sound concerns, including family history, frequent ear infections, hearing concerns, prematurity, etc. You will learn how to look at the full picture rather than relying on one sound error or one age guideline alone.
A realistic case study featuring Maya helps you examine speech errors, developmental history, social-emotional impact, and appropriate next steps. You will then apply your learning through the Speech Sound Development Challenge and an optional AI Role Play involving a new first-grade student scenario.
By the end of the course, you will be better prepared to recognize common speech patterns, describe concerns clearly, and understand when a speech-language screening or comprehensive evaluation may be appropriate.
This course is for educational purposes only. It does not diagnose a speech sound disorder, replace an individualized evaluation, or provide medical or therapeutic advice. Developmental guidelines should be interpreted alongside the child's overall communication skills and individual history.
