With some urging from my friend Jon Galloway, I decided to take a look at OpenID. OpenID aims to solve the login explosion problem:

Let’s say you’re visiting a new website for the first time. As you browse around, eventually you’ll do something that requires more than anonymous guest access. So you’ll get shunted to the “create a new account” page, in whatever form that takes. I’m sure everyone reading this knows the drill. But if the website is OpenID enabled, you don’t have to go through all the typical rigamarole necessary to create a new account. Instead, you can enter your OpenID login:
I’m going to indulge in a bit of hand waving here and assume that you already have an OpenID login. It’s not such a terrible stretch, honestly; every AOL and Yahoo user already has an OpenID login even if they don’t know it yet.
OpenIDs are technically URLs. Here are a few examples:
That’s one usability problem with OpenID: you have to remember a relatively complete personal URL that no two OpenID providers define the same way. Which compares unfavorably to, say, remembering your email address. There are shortcuts around this that I’ll describe later, but for now, there’s ID selector, which provides a reasonably friendly UI for building an OpenID login URL.
If you enter the right URL, you’ll get redirected back to your OpenID provider, where you’ll enter your single set of login credentials.
You’ll be prompted to add this site to your provider’s list of “trusted sites” for your account. Once you do this, you can bypass all of these steps the next time you’re on the site.
And, finally, you’re logged in for the first time!
If that seems like extra work – and remember, I’m not counting the time it took to set up the initial account at ClaimID, either – well, I won’t lie to you. It is more work. But it’s worth noting that:
It’s not exactly frictionless, but it’s a heck of an improvement over having to remember 50 different usernames and passwords for 50 different websites, wouldn’t you say? I think it compares quite favorably with the current champion of frictionless communication: anonymous comment boxes. They typically have three fields to fill out: username, URL, and email. OpenID requires only one. Your provider can proxy your URL and email back to the blog automatically from your provider profile, if you choose a smart provider with attribute exchange support.
Which brings me to the other problem with OpenID. The quality of your OpenID experience is heavily influenced by the provider you choose. For example, Yahoo! is smart enough to work even if you enter nothing but “yahoo.com” as your OpenID URL. That is, assuming you’ve enabled OpenID support for your Yahoo! login. Providers can also offer unique functionality that sets them apart, too. For example, SignOn.com allows the use of Information Cards in Windows, so you can log into a website without ever typing in a password! It’s a bit of work, as you have to associate the Information Card with your provider account first, but I tried it, and it works as advertised.
My experiments with OpenID were quite positive, but all is not wine and roses in the land of OpenID. Stefan Brands identifies some potentially large problems with OpenID, backed by exhaustive references:
As I mentioned above, I feel most of these criticisms can be mitigated by picking a quality, trustworthy OpenID Provider. Particularly one that uses SSL. Since it’s an open ecosystem, I’d hope the more reputable and reliable OpenID providers would rise to the top. And consider the advantages: as an application developer, you no longer have to store passwords! That’s a huge advantage, because storing passwords is the last business you want to be in. Trust me on this one.
I also found Jan Miksovsky’s criticisms of the user experience of OpenID – as of 6 months ago – fairly damning:
Perhaps the most compelling point Jan makes is this one: it is a bit odd to ask users to associate themselves with an arbitrary URL instead of an email address. I definitely saw some rough edges in today’s experimentation, but I’d say the user experience has improved since Jan looked at OpenID. That’s encouraging.
I realize that OpenID is far from an ideal solution. But right now, the one-login-per-website problem is so bad that I am willing to accept these tradeoffs for a partial worse is better solution. There’s absolutely no way I’d put my banking credentials behind an OpenID. But there are also dozens of sites that I don’t need anything remotely approaching banking-grade security for, and I use these sites far more often than my bank. The collective pain of remembering all these logins – and the way my email inbox becomes a de-facto collecting point and security gateway for all of them – is substantial.
If you’re a software developer building an application that requires user accounts, please consider using OpenID rather than polluting the world with yet another login and password. I also encourage you to experiment with OpenID as a user. Create one. Try logging in somewhere with one. If you don’t like the experience, or if you agree with one (or more) of the criticisms I listed above, how can we collectively fix it? We desperately need a solution to the login explosion, and right now the only thing I’ve seen on the horizon that has any kind of critical mass whatsoever is OpenID.
If we can’t make OpenID work, at least for run of the mill, low-value credentials that litter the web in increasing numbers – what hope do we have of ever fixing the login explosion problem?

The north of Pakistan is where all the epic landscapes are, and if you are planning a trip to Northern Pakistan, you are likely to pass through Gilgit, the capital city of Gilgit-Baltistan province, and begin your journey from there. In this article, I will provide you with all the latest information you need to know to travel to Gilgit from Islamabad independently. There are mainly two ways you can travel to Gilgit from Islamabad Rent a car Islamabad.

This is obviously the easiest and less troublesome way to travel to Gilgit, given that the flight doesn't get canceled. They are quite notorious for canceling flights due to the unpredictable weather in the mountains, so I do not consider this option to be reliable.

I had a flight from Skardu to Islamabad cancelled on me, and I had to scramble my way back to Islamabad by road (32 hours!). I still missed my flight out of the country, so if you are planning to fly, please leave at least 3-4 days in your schedule in case you have to find other alternatives.
Pakistan International Airways flies from Islamabad to Gilgit twice a day in the morning at around $113 USD. You might be able to find it cheaper through Expedia or Skyscanner as they may have some third-party discounts for you.
If the flight is canceled, another way you can travel from Islamabad to Gilgit is by bus.
NATCO is a government-owned bus company that connects northern Pakistan to the rest of the country, and you can board one from Islamabad to Gilgit. It is probably the most reliable mode of transportation for independent travelers planning to go up north from Islamabad.
I would recommend that you buy the bus ticket a day before. However, if you do not have time, you can also come to the terminal a few hours earlier and get your ticket then. The bus terminal is located at Pirwadhai Bus Terminal in Rawalpindi. You can take an Uber there.
Once you've got the ticket, be at the terminal 30 minutes before and wait in the room next to the ticket kiosks. The driver will call you when the bus arrives.
Due to previous incidents, the government is not taking any chances with tourists traveling through the Karakoram Highway, and there are certain things you need to prepare before you get on the bus.
Things do change a lot in Pakistan, may it be the bus schedule, documentation required, etc., if before your trip, be sure to consult NATCO official website, just in case.
Things to Prepare Before Your Trip
Overnight buses in Pakistan are pretty safe, and, like in most Muslim countries, men and women are seated separately unless they know each other. So, if you are a solo woman traveler, you will likely have the whole two seats for yourself and are unlikely to be seated with creepy men.
The presence of all these police checkpoints may seem a little excessive, but they are there to protect us. So, if there are any incidents, you can always report them to the police at one of these checkpoints.
As mentioned previously, there are certain areas where the government does not feel comfortable letting tourists roam freely at night, and one of those places is Chilas.
From my personal experience, I was traveling in the opposite direction with a shared taxi, and since I was the only non-Pakistani in the car, we were stopped at a checkpoint after Jaglot. It was around 11 PM, and they told us that we had to turn back and wait until sunrise because we had a foreigner in the car.
For security reasons, they wouldn't allow us to travel through Chilas at night. We tried to persuade them for half an hour, but they wouldn't budge. So, we had to sleep in Jaglot until 5 AM before they let us through.
I missed my flight because of these stupid rules, but at least I made a few new friends coming out of it. Many rules in Pakistan don't make sense, but the best you can do is accept them and go with the flow. The last thing you need is a problem with the police in a country like Pakistan.
Where to Stay in Gilgit?
I highly recommend staying at Madina Hotel 2. It is one of the most peaceful places in Gilgit. I always look forward to coming back here. It is located around the government building area, so it is much quieter than any other places in Gilgit.
They have a beautiful courtyard where you can order food and enjoy a nice meal while surrounded by flowers and mountains. They also have a working hot shower, which is always appreciated.
The owner is amazing. He drove me around Gilgit to find a working Western Union on his motorcycle, all while telling me how Pakistan used to be tourist-friendly and how it changed after 9/11, without charging me a single rupee. He is a good man.

The drains were then treated with 107 CE/ml in an enzyme-foam-based cleaning agent four times in 1 week and twice a week for the following 3 weeks. The establishment of biofilms by pathogenic bacteria in floor drains in food processing plants is believed to protect against effective cleaning regimens and to reduce or minimize the efficacy of bactericidal treatments. Studies have indicated that L. monocytogenes growing within mixed-microflora biofilms in food processing environments can be a major source of contamination (1, 9, 20).
Promising in vitro results have been obtained in previous studies with two competitive-exclusion bacteria (CE), Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis C-1-92 and Enterococcus durans 152, for inhibition of the growth of L. monocytogenes in culture media and in biofilms at temperatures ranging from 4 to 37°C (22). The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of these CE in controlling listerial growth and possibly eliminating the pathogen in floor drains at a wide range of temperatures in a facility in which fresh poultry is processed, including under refrigeration conditions.
The poultry processing plant had two processing lines; each line processed 140 birds per min, and the plant had the capacity to process 400,200 birds per day. Approximately 268,800 birds were processed during a normal day with two shifts.
Based on the direction of flow of the drains, the fluid flow rate, the fluid volume, the drain size, the temperatures of rooms, and the occurrence and persistence of Listeria sp., six floor drains for CE treatment and an untreated control were identified. Drains 1 and 2 were open trenches (height, 25 cm; width, 30 cm) and were comprised of concrete with fiberglass covers. These drains were located close to poultry meat cutting lines at mean temperatures of 16.8 and 11.5°C, respectively, and largely contained liquid drippings from meat, including meat that had fallen on the floor. Drains 1 and 2 were typically filled to 10 to 30% of capacity during operation. Drain 3 was an open trench (height, 25 cm; width, 30 cm) comprised of concrete with metal edging and a metal cover. This drain was located in the middle of a high-traffic area at a mean temperature of 15.1°C and was typically 20 to 40% full during operation. Drains 4 and 6 were open trenches (height, 20 cm; width, 30 cm) and were comprised of fiberglass. They were located near poultry meat packing areas at mean temperatures of 2.8 and 3.8°C, respectively, and were typically filled to 5 to 20% of capacity during operation. Drain 8 was an open trench (height, 150 cm; width, 90 cm) and was comprised of concrete with a fiberglass cover. This drain was near a liver and lung removal line at a mean temperature of 26.1°C and contained blood and meat debris. It was typically filled with liquid to 15 to 20% of capacity.
Using sterile gloves, an 18-oz. sterile “speci-sponge” (3.8 by 7.6 cm; Nasco Laboratory, Fort Atkinson, WI) was used to wipe an area that was ca. 10 by 10 cm at each sampling location. Five locations, including the inside (bottom) of the drain, the right side of the drain, the left side of the drain, the bottom side of the trench cover, and the floor within 30 cm of the drain, were sampled for each floor drain. Each sponge was placed in a Whirl-Pak bag and kept at 5°C for 2 to 14 h until the sample was assayed.

When Listeria sp. was not detected by the direct plating method, the broth plus the sponge was selectively enriched in 225 ml Fraser broth (Becton Dickinson Microbiology Systems) for 24 h at 37°C. Then 1 ml of the broth was serially diluted (1:10) in 0.1% peptone to obtain 10−8 CFU/ml, and 0.1 ml of each dilution was surface plated on MOX plates in duplicate. The MOX plates were incubated at 37°C for 48 h, and typical black colonies were counted as presumptive Listeria sp. colonies. Colonies counted as Listeria sp. colonies were randomly selected and transferred to MOX plates, and they were confirmed to be Listeria sp. by biochemical tests (API 20I miniaturized diagnostic test; bioMérieux Vitek, Hazelwood, MO) and a lateral flow latex agglutination assay (Listeria Rapid Test; Oxoid, Ogdensburg, NY) and to be L. monocytogenes by an enzyme-linked fluorescent immunoassay with an automated VIDAS instrument (miniVIDAS; bioMérieux Vitek, Hazelwood, MO) and by a PCR assay (Qualicon BAX system; DuPont, Wilmington, DE).
