Roughly 20 pieces of clothing per person are manufactured each year. Growth of the multi-trillion-dollar apparel industry has been fed by "fast fashion," which makes clothing cheaply and quickly with a low price-tag. Increased Production and Consumption
Fast fashion uses innovative production and distribution models to dramatically shorten fashion cycles, sometimes getting a garment from the designer to the customer in a matter of a weeks instead of months. The number of fashion seasons has increased from two a year - spring/summer and fall/winter - to as many as 50-100 microseasons.
Fast-changing trends and low prices have allowed people to consume more. The average consumer is now purchasing 60 percent more items of clothing compared to 2000, but each garment is kept half as long.
Water Stress and Pollution
Cotton is the most common natural fiber used to make clothing, accounting for about 33 percent of all fibers found in textiles. Cotton is also a very thirsty crop, requiring 2,700 liters of water—what one person drinks in two-and-a-half years—to make one cotton shirt. In areas already facing water stress, cotton production can be particularly damaging. In Central Asia, for instance, the Aral Sea has nearly disappeared because cotton farmers draw excessively from the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers. Cotton farming is also responsible for 24 percent of insecticides and 11 percent of pesticides despite using about 3 percent of the world's arable land.
Water use and pollution also take place during clothing production. About 20 percent of industrial water pollution is due to garment manufacturing, while the world uses 5 trillion liters (1.3 trillion gallons) of water each year for fabric dyeing alone, enough to fill 2 million Olympic-sized swimming pools.
The carbon footprint of a garment largely depends on the material. While synthetic fibers like polyester have less impact on water and land than grown materials like cotton, they emit more greenhouse gasses per kilogram. A polyester shirt has more than double the carbon footprint of a cotton shirt (5.5 kg vs. 2.1 kg, or 12.1 pounds vs 4.6 pounds). Polyester production for textiles released about 706 billion kg (1.5 trillion pounds) of greenhouse gases in 2015, the equivalent of 185 coal-fired power plants' annual emissions.
Apparel spending is projected to grow tremendously. This is particularly true in Asia, as hundreds of millions of people in China and India enter the global middle class.
By 2030, there will be 5.4 billion people in the global middle class, up from 3 billion in 2015. We can expect increased demand for clothes and other goods that define middle-income lifestyles. If consumption continues at its current rate, we'll need three times as many natural resources by 2050 compared to what we used in 2000.
Assuming infinite resources in a finite world is not a sustainable business model. Beyond environmental concerns, unchecked consumption will undermine the world's economic and social goals. Some apparel companies will ignore those signals and continue with traditional take-make-waste business models. Others will embrace innovative new models that work within planetary boundaries and are a better fit for tomorrow's markets.
Apparel is just one sector competing for natural resources, but it's important that clothing makers start transforming their business models now given the industry's strong growth trajectory. Many companies are aware of the environmental risks and are ready to act.
The first step is for companies to measure their environmental impacts and understand areas where they can improve. The Sustainable Apparel Coalition's Higg Index lets companies measure the environmental, social and labor impacts of their products and services, and work is being done on Science Based Targets guidance for the apparel industry.
Some companies are working to improve their resource efficiency. H&M and Zara, both purveyors of fast fashion, joined 33 other fashion companies in a pledge to increase their clothing recycling by 2020 and are collecting and recycling used clothing at many of their stores. Reformation, a smaller Los Angeles-based clothing brand that is gaining popularity, claims that it produces its clothing with far less water and emissions than typical clothing companies, and even publishes the spared water and emissions quantities on each product webpage.
The next step is to recognize that companies must do more than improve efficiency to sustainably meet demand in the years ahead. They must produce less stuff. Some companies have already acknowledged this and are testing new models, though these examples are still the exception rather than the rule. Patagonia's Worn Wear program offers a service to fix old clothes rather than only sell new ones. Companies like Mud Jeans, Rent the Runway and Gwynnie Bee are experimenting with rental models. Some companies, such as Zady's, are calling for a return to "slow fashion," promoting it as a key component to their business model.

If you have ever owned and or managed a business you know that the task is not as easy as it may appear to be. Owners spend a lot more time than what hours the business is open. The first things to know are a few reasons why various businesses aren’t around any longer. Number one is undercapitalization, Another is lack of business experience or knowledge and the unwillingness to do what it takes. Then there is the owner with a lousy attitude which I have witnessed as a reason for a business to say bye-bye and the lack of customers forces closure.
Some owners prefer to retire and close up shop rather than sell which I have also been witness to. And there are the corporate entities that either close underperforming units or the corporation goes out of business. Due to changing buying habits some businesses are not relevant any longer. Remember Radio Shack?
When I started to think about businesses no longer here I took a deep dive down memory lane and found out the list is quite extensive, a lot more than I originally thought. After I found Orange Julius in the Escondido Village Mall I knew I was in Eden. There wasn’t anything like that in New Jersey from whence I came. Mmmmm, so good. Following will be a long list of shops, stores and restaurants gone but I will not include North County Fair, ooops I mean Westfield North County, as major malls have constant turnover. I trust these names will bring back fond memories—most all locally owned.
Here we go. Alpha Beta, Food Basket, Mayfair, Westside Market. Westside Cafe, Frazier Farms, Wayside Shop, China Doll Restaurant, Chuck’s Steak House, Mr. Steak, Cask & Cleaver, Fireside, Straw Hat Pizza, Square Pan Pizza, Lampost Pizza, Father and Sons Pizza, los Amigos, Hacienda de Vega, Skipper’s Club, Longbranch Saloon, Dante’s Restaurant, Murphy’s Frozen Custard (very good), Finney Field, Red Root Field, and I will include George and Ann’s for all you EHS grads although they may have closed before I moved here. Not sure.
TG&Y, Green Music, Farrell’s, Walker Scott, Aunt Emma’s, Lodico’s, O’Bryans’, Krishna Mulvaney’s, and Dominguez family restaurants in numerous locations had the best salsa anywhere. For me, El Taquito had the best carne asada. Bittner’s Gun Shop, Foster’s Freeze, San Diego Office Supply, Cowan’s Sporting Goods, Ernie Cowan Photography, Dailey Photography, Olan Mills Photography. Ottoson’s Jewlers, Bijou Theater, Plaza Theater, Montgomery Ward’s, J.J. Newberry, W.T. Grant. Side bar here: I bought a sweater in December ‘73 at Grants and I still have it although I think it may have shrunk a tad around the middle. Curious.
Whew! Not done yet. In ‘73 Escondido population was about 34,000 and we had 40 bowling lanes between Palomar Lanes and Brunswick Bowl. Today we are almost five times larger and we have zero bowling lanes. No more Ups ‘n Downs either where the last venture there was roller derby. Builder’s Emporium, Handyman, Nurseryland, Mart’s Appliance where I took small appliances for expert repair at the Grand Avenue store then at the Valley Parkway location. He retired and realized that repairing small appliances wasn’t practical in today’s disposable society. Good thing shoe repair still makes sense, thank you Doart and thank you Coast Vacuum for both of your long time service to the community.
A big deal in its day was the Ardan Center now Palomar College Escondido campus. I have to digress again. Before Ardan, that corner was the sight of a religious tent revival meeting in either late ‘73 or ‘74. When I saw the tent in the morning I thought the circus had come to town but on my way home after work I saw inside hundreds of wooden folding chairs set up. Around the same time period there was a man riding a horse on E. Valley, full cowboy outfit, two live six-guns. He was arrested. The 5-Shot Challenge launched with one time NBA Champion, J.J. Barea, who brought his A-Game with some tough shots he made during the resumption of play in the NBA Campus at Walt Disney Resort. Barea, a career 35% shooter from deep, is well known for his long-range marksmanship, but the 5’10” guard showed that he is more than a perimeter threat with his first shot in his appearance on the Ballogy App.
Barea’s left-handed (his off-hand), reverse layup off the glass was quite the start for his week of trick shots, as it forces players to work on creating and using angles off of the backboard. While the NBPA x Ballogy 5-Shot Challenge is meant to be fun and a way for kids to express themselves on the court, it also provides kids an opportunity to work on their game by taking and making some challenging game-winning shots.

It’s always about this time of year, that parents start asking their kids what they want for Christmas. I have found this exercise to be both joyful and dreadful. Some of the things kids ask for get tossed out immediately. Pony? No. Another dog? Absolutely not.
And then some of the stuff they ask for, it’s like, really? You can ask me for anything you want, and that’s what you decided on? Of course, my kid isn’t like this. It’s all those other kids who have had their brains warped by YouTube. I mean, I just googled the best toy for Christmas 2023. The top result, and I’m not making this up, is a game called, “Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza.” Really. It’s just that inane. That’s what our kids are clamoring for. Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza. That’s what we want. Be careful when you ask your kids what they want for Christmas, it’s both a dreadful and a joyful routine we go through every year.
But it’s those emotions that I want to tap into today. It’s both those feelings the prophet Amos is dealing with. We get Amos, on the emotional level, even if you don’t know much about him. Now for those of you who don’t spend their days and nights pondering the ancient Israelite prophets, I’ll give you the refresher. Amos probably lived around 750 B.C. He was a farmer, but then God calls Amos to be a prophet, to speak God’s truth. Because God is so aggravated by the people of God. And no matter how many times God says to do the right thing, the people of Israel don’t do the right thing. Now, it looks like the people of Israel were doing the right thing. They were saying all the right prayers, they have all the right hymns, they gather on all the right days. But it’s just a big show. They’re not taking care of the widows and the orphans, the rich are getting richer and the poor are starving to death. They have the outward appearance of righteousness but it all stinks.
God says, “I hate, I despise your festivals, I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them…Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listen to the melody of your harps” (Amos 5:21, 22a, 23). Don’t you love that? It’s like, God is putting his hands over his ears because he just can’t take their “holier than thou” racket. God is tired of their showing off.
And to make matters worse, the same people who are doing all of that, say that they want the Day of the Lord. They say they want God to appear. Like a parent dreading that big Christmas shopping trip to Target, God says, “really? That’s what you want?” Because the people don’t know what that entails. The Day of the Lord, Amos says, is a day of darkness, not light (Amos 5:20). The Day of the Lord, it’s like someone fleeing from a lion only to meet a bear. Like someone who leans up against a wall, and is bitten by a snake (Amos 5:19). The Day of the Lord is the Day of Judgment. And God, God is angry at how they spend all their time and energy doing the rituals, but not doing the right thing. You want the Day of the Lord? Amos is warning the people; you had better be ready for what you are asking for. Judgment.
This is one of the grand themes that runs throughout the entire Bible. Though we modern, sensible, enlightened Christians find it unpalatable. Think about it, we talk about wanting a closer relationship with God. We hear Christian music on the radio, about seeing God’s face and holding God’s hand. We read the Bible and take communion because we want to feel God’s presence. We say prayers to invite God into our hearts. This would be lunacy, maybe even idolatry to Amos. Amos is reminding the people of Israel that the Day of the Lord, God’s presence, is dreadful. What God brings is judgment. When wrongs will be made right, when the poor will be raised up, when the hungry will be filled, when justice will flow down like mighty waters (Amos 5:24). Judgment.
Like spoiled children compiling their Christmas wish lists, I think that modern Christianity has become all too cozy with God. We don’t know what we’re asking for. We’ve lost Amos’ sense of fear and reverence and awe and might and majesty. We’ve made the trade; we’ve traded justice for complacency. We spend our time thinking about how to pray and worship, rather than praying and worshiping. We come to our dignified churches and hear about this nice man who lived two thousand years ago who taught us how to be good people; instead of actually living as good people. We don’t want to come to church and hear about God’s dreadful presence and almighty power; we want to be entertained, to feel better about ourselves, to have something for the kids to do on Sunday morning, to get ready for work next week. What we really want, is the Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza version of Christianity and call it good enough. But in the words of Amos, “Alas for you who desire the day of the Lord!” (Amos 5:18a).
The Day of the Lord. It sounds so ominous, foreboding, awful. But only for those of us who have something to lose. Only for those of us who are asking for all the wrong things. Judgment is also good news. Again, think back to holy scriptures, judgment can be good. The Israelites are enslaved by the Egyptians; they cry out for judgment, and God frees the Israelites from their bondage. The people of God are dragged away to Babylon; they cry out to God for judgment, and God brings them back to Jerusalem. The saints of God cry out against Herod, that barbarian, for all his evil deeds; God executes judgment and Herod is eaten alive by worms (Acts 12:23). I did not make that up, it’s in the New Testament. Judgment can be good for those who are the losing side.
But what Amos does so brilliantly, is that he turns it all inside out. And warns the people that God’s judgment is also for the people of God. Just because they are Israelites, that does not mean they are free from judgment. Just because we are followers of Jesus, that does not mean that we don’t have to deal with God’s indignation. Just because we are good, decent, Episcopalians doesn’t mean that we don’t have some things to work on. The good news, is that God is fair. God shows no partiality and God judges everyone equally. God wants our world to flow with the mighty waters of justice and fairness and peace and equality. Even if we put on the right show, say the right words, appear to be good, we might just be the problem. That is God’s righteous judgment.
That’s what the parable of the ten bridesmaids is getting at. And I know we find this parable unsavory. It seems so stark, so judgmental. But there is grace here. Think about it – the parable is about a wedding. A bridesmaid and a bridegroom. It’s not a funeral, it’s a party. The vision that Jesus lays out for God’s final judgment is a celebration, a festival, the joyful union between God and God’s people. I would like to think that I am one of those wise bridesmaids, ready for God.
But I have to admit, that there are parts of me that are more like the foolish bridesmaids. There are parts of my life that remain hidden in the dark. Parts of my life that need to be sorted out by God’s dreadful judgment. I buy cheap clothes from people who work at poverty wages. I financially benefit from corporations who wreak havoc on the environment. I am given to anger and jealousy. I am highly competitive, to the point where I get in my own way. Rather than thinking about these ten bridesmaids as ten different people, I have been thinking about them as different aspects of my life. Some of me is ready for the Day of the Lord, some of me is not. Some of me is celebrating the grace of God, some of me cowers at the thought of God’s righteous judgment. Part of me joyfully awaits the Lord God. Part of me know that if the Lord were to appear right now, he would say to me, “I do not know you.”
So it all goes back to where I started. When I kneel here, at my prayer desk and say those words, “thy kingdom come,” do I really know what I’m asking for? And am I ready for that gift? Is my soul ready for both that grace and that judgment? So mostly what I want to say today is this – be careful what you pray for. Be careful what you ask for. And when you say that you want to be close to Jesus, be ready for what that means. It will be grace, it will be joy, but it will also mean that all the parts of us that we are trying to hide will be found out. The Day of the Lord will be joy and grace, but you will never be the same.
