Green Computing with Sustainability is an interdisciplinary course that explores how computing technologies can be designed, used, and managed in an environmentally responsible manner. The course introduces learners to the principles of green computing and their importance in addressing global challenges such as climate change, energy consumption, and electronic waste. It emphasises the role of information technology in supporting sustainable development while minimizing ecological impact.
Learners will study the environmental effects of hardware production, software execution, networking, and data center operations. Key topics include energy-efficient hardware design, power-aware software, virtualization and cloud computing, sustainable data center management, and green networking practices. The course also covers life cycle assessment of IT equipment, focusing on procurement, usage, reuse, recycling, and safe disposal of electronic waste.
In addition, students will explore sustainability metrics and standards such as Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), Energy Star, EPEAT, and ISO environmental frameworks.
