Mastering HEC-RAS: Guided Practice Exercises
What you'll learn
Build and configure a 1D steady flow model by setting up cross sections, assigning roughness values, and applying boundary conditions.
Run 1D and 2D models, then interpret results by evaluating water surface elevations and energy grade lines.
Set up 1D and 2D unsteady flow scenario using inflow hydrographs and controlling computational time steps.
Incorporate bridges and culverts into your model using structure data, ineffective flow zones, and roadway geometry.
Construct 1D and 2D flow areas using terrain layers, enforce breaklines, and adjust mesh density for accurate surface modeling.
Run unsteady 1D and 2D simulations and explore outputs such as flood depths, flow velocities, and inundation extents in RAS Mapper.
Connect 1D to 2D systems through lateral connections, storage elements, and internal flow boundaries.
Model sediment transport based on different transport functions, sediment characteristics, and sorting behavior.
Requirements
This course is intended to be a companion course to accompany the the HEC-RAS Lessons course. Rather than cover each topic one at a time, these exercises provides full working examples of building and running a working hydrologic model from scratch, which will combine a number of the topics covered in the HEC-RAS Lessons videos.
Description
** All videos are downloadable ** Put your HEC-RAS knowledge into practice with this hands-on exercise video series, designed to complement and extend the concepts covered in the HEC-RAS Lessons course. In this companion series, you'll build complete 1D and 2D hydraulic models from scratch-focusing on real-world scenarios that integrate multiple modeling components into fully functioning simulations. Rather than breaking down individual topics, each exercise walks through the workflow of setting up, running, and interpreting a full project. You'll apply steady and unsteady flow techniques, configure geometry and boundary conditions, and incorporate bridges, culverts, and other structures into your models. Terrain processing, mesh refinement, and breakline enforcement are covered as you develop accurate 2D flow areas. You'll also practice linking 1D and 2D systems, managing internal boundaries and storage connections, and simulating sediment transport in dynamic flow conditions. As with the lessons course, you'll continue using RAS Mapper to visualize key outputs like inundation extents, flow depths, and water surface profiles-but this time within the context of complete modeling workflows. These exercises emphasize problem-solving, integration, and model building from the ground up, making them ideal for reinforcing your skills and gaining confidence with more complex applications.By the end of the course, you'll have completed several end-to-end HEC-RAS modeling projects and developed the practical experience needed to tackle similar tasks in consulting, regulatory, or academic settings. Completion of the HEC-RAS Lessons course is recommended, but not required, especially for users with prior exposure to hydraulic modeling.
Who this course is for
This course is ideal for beginners new to hydraulic modeling, professionals looking to expand their skills in HEC-RAS, and experienced users seeking a practical refresher on both 1D and 2D modeling workflows. Whether you're an engineer, planner, or floodplain manager, you'll find valuable tools and techniques to apply in real-world projects.
