This question comes up a lot, so here's a quick breakdown of suede versus
smooth leather, plus a few things to check before you buy either.
SMOOTH LEATHER
- Firmer look and a cleaner surface, which gives a sharper, more classic
style (biker, cafe racer, trucker).
- Handles light rain and everyday wear better, and wipes clean easily.
- Develops character as it ages, with natural creasing over time.
SUEDE
- Softer, textured, and warmer-looking. It suits fall and winter well.
- Needs more care: it marks easily, and water can stain it.
- A suede protector spray and a suede brush are worth having.
WHICH ONE FITS YOU
- Wear it nearly every day, in all weather: smooth leather.
- Want a softer, more relaxed look for cooler months: suede.
- Only buying one jacket: a dark smooth leather one usually stays in
style the longest.
CHECKS FOR EITHER TYPE
1. Ask what grade of leather it is. "Genuine leather" alone doesn't say much.
2. Look at close-up photos of the surface and seams.
3. Check the stitching around underarms and pockets, and test the zips.
4. Make sure the shoulder seam sits at your shoulder point and the sleeves
reach your wrist bone.
CARE BASICS
- Smooth leather: wipe with a damp soft cloth and condition once or twice
a year.
- Suede: brush gently, keep it dry, and avoid heat to dry it.
