icon_mess My OAT Experience: Preparing for Optometry School Under Pressure

When I decided to apply for optometry school, I knew the first big hurdle was the Optometry Admission Test. This test measures your knowledge in areas like biology, chemistry, and physics. According to the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO), a solid score is a key part of your application. I had only two months to prepare while working a full-time job. The pressure was real. I started by downloading the official test outline and marking a calendar. Every night after work, I studied one subject section. My goal was simple: understand the structure of the OAT exam before I even touched a single practice book.

How I Used OAT Practice Test Questions Daily?
The real game changer was using OAT practice test questions every single morning. I would wake up 45 minutes early and answer 20 questions before breakfast. These were not random questions. I focused on the exact format and wording found in real tests. Over time, I noticed patterns in how the questions were written. For example, the physics section often mixed formulas with real life scenarios. Chemistry questions loved to test the same five reaction types. By doing this daily, I stopped feeling scared of the timer. Instead, I learned to read faster and spot wrong answers quickly. This habit also showed me my weak areas, like organic chemistry, so I could spend extra time there.

Turning OAT Questions and Answers into Study Sessions
On weekends, I studied by reviewing OAT questions and answers from past test takers. I did not just check if my answer was right or wrong. I read every explanation. Why was option B correct? Why was option C a trap? This method helped me understand the logic behind each question. I also created simple flashcards for formulas and common facts. I kept these in my bag to review during lunch breaks or while waiting for appointments. Slowly, the pressure turned into focus. I stopped worrying about failing and started trusting my daily practice. By test day, I felt ready not because I was perfect, but because I had faced hundreds of practice questions already.
