Master mixed-mode survey design strategies to balance trade-offs in mode selection, measurement, cost, and quality
What you'll learn
⚡ Understand why modern surveys increasingly require mixed-mode designs
⚡ Apply key survey design theories and frameworks to real-world research challenges
⚡ Differentiate between contact and data collection modes in mixed-mode designs
⚡ Evaluate the strengths and limitations of major contact modes for gaining respondent cooperation
⚡ Compare the cost, speed, coverage, and measurement trade-offs of different data collection modes
⚡ Strengthen your understanding of best practices through applied examples
Requirements
❗ No previous experience or knowledge needed
Description
TheFundamentals of Mixed-Mode Survey Designcourse provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of implementing surveys that rely on multiple contact and data collection modes. This course prepares you to navigate the complex reality of a rapidly shifting survey environment by offering a structured understanding of survey modes and mixed-mode strategies grounded in the Total Survey Error framework.
After establishing the historical evolution of survey modes, this course grounds you in social exchange theory and leverage-salience theory to understand why respondents choose to participate in surveys. You will learn how these theories inform practical design decisions to create motivating and trustworthy survey requests.
Next, you will learn about the critical distinction between contact modes and data collection modes and how various mixed-mode designs can encompass either or both types of modes. You will take a deep dive into five major contact modes (mail, email, text, phone, in-person), their relative costs and speeds, and how design choices may influence contact and cooperation. You will then take an in-depth look into four major data collection modes (web, paper, telephone, and in-person) and how each mode affects measurement, respondent experience, survey logistics, and field operations. Throughout the course, you will learn through numerous real-world examples how mixed-mode strategies are designed, tested, and adapted into practice.
By the end of the course, you will be able to choose, combine, and sequence modes to achieve high-quality, cost-efficient, and respondent-friendly survey designs.
As the second course in a three-course series, this course contains promotions for additional courses aimed at implementing these principles in practice.
Who this course is for
⭐ This course is built for academic and professional researchers, college/university students, and all others interested in conducting survey research in the social sciences, health, business, or related fields.
