I started getting calls from G. Long & Associates a few weeks ago, and at first I had no idea who they were. They left vague voicemails just saying to call them back about an “important matter.”
When I finally answered, they claimed I owed a debt I didn’t even recognize. I asked them to send written validation, and the rep got pretty pushy. After looking them up, I found out they are a debt collection law firm based out of North Andover, MA. It seems like they represent creditors and can even file lawsuits if you ignore them.
What I learned the hard way: don’t just pay or agree to anything over the phone. I requested a debt validation letter first to make sure the debt was actually mine and the amount was correct. I also read up on the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) – for example, they aren’t supposed to call at odd hours or threaten things like jail time.
If you’re dealing with them, be careful. They might threaten wage garnishment or bank levies if they get a court judgment. Ignoring a summons if they sue you could lead to a default judgment. I ended up consulting someone to help negotiate a settlement because I didn’t want to risk my paycheck being garnished.
