По умолчанию When Passive Liquidity Strategies Become Difficult to Maintain

The phrase “passive income” gets thrown around a lot in DeFi, but I sometimes wonder how passive liquidity provision really is once the market starts moving. Depositing tokens into a pool and collecting trading fees sounds convenient, especially for someone who doesn't want to spend hours watching price charts. However, maintaining a profitable position can require considerably more attention than the initial setup suggests. What made me question this idea was looking into different automated market maker models, including the liquidity mechanisms associated with thruster blast https://thrusterfi.co/ . These systems show how users can provide assets for decentralized trading while potentially earning fees, but they also reveal why market conditions can turn a relatively simple strategy into an ongoing responsibility. In traditional liquidity pools, capital is usually distributed across a broad range of prices. This means positions can remain available for trading without constantly changing their parameters. The downside is that some deposited assets may contribute relatively little to transactions occurring near the current market price. Concentrated liquidity offers another approach. Providers choose particular price intervals, potentially making their capital more productive. The thruster blast model included concentrated liquidity functionality, demonstrating how narrower ranges can improve fee generation when trading remains within the selected boundaries. Unfortunately, cryptocurrency markets don't always cooperate with carefully chosen ranges. Imagine depositing ETH and a stablecoin when prices appear stable. A sudden market rally or correction could push the trading price outside the position's active interval. At that point, the position may stop earning swap fees, even though the underlying assets remain allocated to the liquidity strategy. The provider then needs to decide whether to wait for prices to return or adjust the position. This is one reason I find the thruster blast example useful when discussing supposedly passive strategies. A narrow liquidity range might produce attractive results during calm periods, but maintaining it through volatile conditions can require repeated decisions. Rebalancing also introduces costs. Adjusting a position may involve withdrawing liquidity, exchanging tokens, and depositing assets into a different range. Even when blockchain transaction fees are relatively inexpensive, repeated adjustments can reduce overall profitability. Another consideration is impermanent loss. As token prices change, the composition of a liquidity position changes too. Providers might accumulate trading fees while still performing worse than someone who simply held the original assets. When evaluating thruster blast strategies, I would therefore distinguish gross fee revenue from actual net returns. Higher fee generation doesn't necessarily compensate for unfavorable price movements, rebalancing expenses, or the time spent managing positions.
