The new champion only broke the 29-year-old record last month but clocked 45.94 seconds in Tokyo taking almost a second off his previous world best of 46.70secs he set in Oslo at the start of July. He finished ahead of the USA’s Rai Benjamin (46.17s) and Brazil’s Alison Dos Santos (46.72s).Gymnastics queen Simone Biles returned to action on Tuesday in the balance beam final after only competing once before withdrawing from the team final after just one rotation a week ago. After taking herself out of competition citing mental health concerns and the “twisties” she produced a phenomenal routine to claim bronze, just as she did five years ago in Rio.

Elsewhere, Laura and Jason Kenny both claimed silver medals in track cycling finals. Laura finished second in the team pursuit behind Germany while Jason came in behind Netherlands in the team sprint to equal Bradley Wiggins as Britain’s most decorated Olympian with eight medals.

Athletics action later in the day will see the women’s 200m and 800m finals as well as the men’s pole vault.Wow, 17-year-old Erriyon Knighton has scorched through the field to reach the final of the men’s 200m. The American sets a time of 20:02 seconds to qualify with ease, ahead of Jamaica’s Rasheed Dwyer and Nigeria’s Divine Oduduru.

Great Britain’s Harry Coppell has set a season’s best in reaching 5.80m in the men’s pole vault final, and is one of seven athletes through to reach that mark.

Through three rounds the 25-year-old has an identical scorecard as the defending champion, Brazil’s Thiago Braz.Japan’s Daiki Hashimoto has claimed his second gold medal of the Olympic Games after winning the horizontal bars final.

The men’s all-around champion scored 15.066 on his final effort to edge Tin Srbic (14.900) and Nikita Nagornyy (14.533).Hashimoto also won a silver medal in the team all-around event, in what has been a sparkling Games for the 19-year-old star.
