Move from simply using AI to building and growing your own personal AI - one that carries your memory, knowledge.
What you'll learn
⚡ Build a personal AI environment based on the book "AI of One's Own."
⚡ Set up Docker and AnythingLLM as the foundation for your own personal AI.
⚡ Configure OpenAI, Ollama bge-m3, LanceDB, workspaces, and system prompts.
⚡ Use RAG, pinned references, and MCP tools to connect AI with your own context.
⚡ Add time, memory, filesystem, Fetch, Brave Search, SQLite, Calendar, and Gmail read-only checks.
⚡ Understand backup, cost control, Tailscale access, and long-term operation.
Requirements
❗ Basic Mac or PC skills are enough. You should be able to use a browser and manage files.
❗ No programming experience is required. The course walks through the setup step by step.
❗ An internet connection and the ability to install apps such as Docker Desktop are required.
❗ Some familiarity with ChatGPT or other AI tools will help, but it is not required.
❗ Some optional sections may require API keys or accounts for services such as OpenAI, Google, Brave Search, or Tailscale.
Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
This course is a practical companion to the book "AI of One's Own."
In this course, you will build the "Personal AI Self" described in the book: a personal AI environment that can connect to your own documents, memory, schedule, and working context.
What we build here is not just another chatbot.
Instead of simply using cloud AI tools such as ChatGPT, you will learn how to create an environment where AI can work with your own materials, your own knowledge, your own schedule, and your own workflow.
Docker and AnythingLLM are not the final goal of this course.
They are the foundation - the vessel - for building your own personal AI.
Step by step, this course covers Docker, AnythingLLM, initial setup, system prompts, workspaces, RAG, pinned references, MCP, time, memory, filesystem, Fetch, Brave Search, SQLite, Google Calendar and Gmail read-only integration, cost control, backup, and Tailscale.
Each technical element is treated as one part of a larger system: a way to grow your own personal AI.
The goal is not to hand everything over to AI. The goal is to keep your own judgment at the center while giving AI access to the documents, context, and tools that support your work and thinking.
Programming experience is not required. If you can use a Mac or PC, operate a browser, and manage files, you can follow the course step by step.
By the end of the course, you will understand not only Docker and AnythingLLM as individual tools, but also how to combine them into a personal AI environment that you can build, grow, protect, and operate over time.
If you have read "AI of One's Own," this course serves as the practical screen-based walkthrough. If this is your first encounter with the idea, it is an entry point into building your own personal AI environment.
Move from simply using AI to building and growing your own personal AI - one that carries your memory, knowledge, and context.
Production note
This course uses AI tools for parts of the narration, visual production, and editing support under the instructor's planning, supervision, and review. The course content, structure, and technical workflow are reviewed by the instructor and aligned with the book "AI of One's Own."
Who this course is for
⭐ Readers of "AI of One's Own" who want to recreate the setup through screen-based lessons.
⭐ People who want to build a personal AI environment with their own documents, memory, and context.
⭐ Beginners and intermediate users interested in Docker, AnythingLLM, RAG, MCP, and local-first AI workflows.
⭐ Knowledge workers, creators, consultants, researchers, and solo builders who want AI to support their own thinking.
⭐ Anyone who wants to move from simply using cloud AI to building and growing a personal AI system.
