About 400 institutions were evaluated in this general category, and several individual online undergraduate majors are also ranked. Among the Best Online Bachelor's Programs, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University—Worldwide and the University of Florida tied for first. They were followed by:
Engagement (35%): The extent to which online bachelor's degree programs promote participation in courses, allowing students opportunities to readily interact with their instructors and classmates. Instructor accessibility and responsiveness are also considered.
Services and Technologies (25%): Use of diverse online learning technologies allowing greater flexibility for students to take classes from a distance. In addition, attention is given to the presence of strong support structures that provide learning assistance, career guidance and financial aid resources similar to quality campus-based programs.
Faculty Credentials and Training (20%): Use of instructors with academic credentials that mirror those of instructors for campus-based programs along with sufficient resources to train these instructors to teach distance learners.
Expert Opinion (20%): A survey of high-ranking academic officials that accounts “for intangible factors affecting program quality that are not captured by statistics.”Online masters’s programs in several different fields are also ranked. The number one ranking for on-line MBAs was a three-way tie between Indiana University–Bloomington, University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, and the University of Southern California. They were followed by Carnegie Mellon University in fourth place and the University of Florida and the University of Washington, which tied for fifth.
Columbia University was ranked first among Computer Information Technology Master's programs, followed by Johns Hopkins University, Virginia Tech, the University of Southern California and the University of Arizona.
Columbia University claimed to top rating for Master's in Engineering Programs, followed by UCLA, Pennsylvania State University and Purdue University (tied for third), and the University of Southern California in fifth place.
Clemson University earned the No. 1 rating among the Best Online Master's in Education Programs. It was followed by the University of Florida, University of Georgia and University of Illinois (tied for third), and Texas A & M University and University of North Texas (tied for fifth place).
Ohio State University, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of South Carolina all tied for the top spot in the Master's Programs in Nursing ranking. Rush University was fourth; Duke University was ranked fifth.
